East County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program: Day 1- Orientation

Introductions were a huge aspect of Orientation Day for the East County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program held at Cuyamaca College.  Leadership Alumni were on hand to break the ice so new classmates would feel comfortable as they started their first day of the ten month program.  Leaders were already being shaped and molded as we were guided to participate in team building and communication exercises.  Our facilitator for the day, Rebecca Collier, taught us how to properly network with one another by having conversations that were based on one person asking questions and one person answering and then switching roles, enabling everyone to learn in-depth information about their classmates.  An all day class may seem like a huge commitment to some, but by the end of the day, the whole class seemed to leave with a positive energy and was excited for the next class meeting.  With Orientation over, the Class of 2011 (the best class ever!) will be learning about San Diego’s economy and how we can be leaders in our community to help with this ongoing issue.  This program was formed to educate people about East County San Diego and give them the proper tools to make a difference in the community.  The interactions and developing relationships from Orientation generated the anticipation of classmates to join the next meeting and continue to learn about leadership in our community.

Sam Mejia at the Rancho San Diego - Jamul Summer Music & Culture Festival 2010

The Rancho San Diego – Jamul Chamber of Commerce presented Summer Music and Culture Festival 2010 on Sunday in the Water Conservation Garden at  Cuyamaca College.  East County Cultural Ambassador Sam Mejia produced the concert at the event in conjunction with the Rancho San Diego – Jamul Chamber of Commerce.

   Cultural Ambassador Sam Mejia was approached by The Chamber of Commerce of Rancho San Diego Jamul about being apart of their art festival when he mentioned that he was working on a Music and Arts Fest to be held in East County San Diego next year.  An agreement was reached to merge both ideas for the Rancho San Diego event on August 8, 2010, to be held in the picturesque garden of Cuyamaca College and Amphitheater and the rest was history! 

    “I hit the ground running as Cultural Ambassador for East County News.Net”,  said Sam Mejia “I am really excited for this opportunity to earn my recently bestowed title from my new family here at “E C N”.  

    “ I am also extremely  honored to be producing this Amazing Free concert for the people of East County San Diego and thank The Rancho San Diego Chamber for  this great challenge and rich oppurtunity to unite so many cultures represented by some of the best Performers and up and coming Artists in San Diego County!  I searched high and low at farmers markets, street fairs and called in a few favors with some great friends in the entertainment industry some of which are being featured on a nationally syndicated talent show.  All this at no cost to the public and fun for the whole family during financially challenging times”

    The musical ”Trip Around The World in a day” begins at 4pm with a Tribute to our Troops and Our Fallen Heros with the United States Marine Corp. Color Guard followed with award winning Bagpiper and Composer Robert Burns. Then we sail to the Pacific Island sights and sounds of Mendiola Island Productions featuring Beautiful Hula Dancers and Fire Dancing.

Todo Mundo will also perform a blend of Latin Folk Rock, Bossanova and Reggae. Their songs are in Spanish but their music is a universal language!

  Enjoy the festive Jamaican ”Roots & Reggae” sounds of the Levi Wise Band the musical voyage continues as we travel to Spain with the Flamenco flavored sounds of “Smooth Jazz” Recording Artists Novamenco who entertained hundreds at the same venue on July 24 2010, as a grand finale as mentioned above with an enchanting performance by Danyavaad and The Shimmy Sisters fresh from performing on National Television!  They will captivate you with a Gypsy-Indian Fusion sound as the Shimmy Sisters incorporate the ancient art of snake charming and fire-lit sword balancing!

 The Festival itself sponsored by the Rancho San Diego Jamul Chamber of Commerce begins at 11am with  delicious food and face painting for the kids along with Arts and Crafts including museum quality pieces of Tibetan Jewelry, Vendor Booths, a Beer Garden sponsored by the Chamber & Winc Garden hosted by Gio Bistro in La Mesa. Gio will also be featuring free food samples of their award winning cusine!
